In math equations certain letters have traditionally stood for certain things, e.g. u, v, . . . z are variables, s, t are often used as parameters. In summations, i, j, k, l , m, n are most used. If there is a special reason for h and k as the center of the conics it might come from German. The Germans had a strong influence in math when it was being evolving. h and k might be in some way connected to the German for horizontal and vertical.
