Many people don't realize that their physical habits for sitting can dramatically affect their comfort on the job. This class will help you prevent (or heal from) injury, and stay productive and healthy. Even if you already have a good ergonomic set-up, the way you use it can make a difference in your health. Learn how to apply proper body mechanics, alleviate pain, improve skeletal support and awareness, and create dynamic healthy posture for commonly used workstation actions. Workshop includes two group classes, plus two individual consultations. Appropriate for those who feel occasional tingling in their arms or hands during work; have pain or stiffness in their back, neck, shoulders or hands; or have trouble with 'mousing,' seated posture, or transitions between sitting and standing. Correct the physical habits that may be aggravating your condition or slowing your healing. http://hip.stanford.edu Terman Engineering Center, rm 453 7 May 2008 at 9:48pm

Come join us in this teen-driven event, where we invite teens to share their insights into their "always connected" way of life. Teens are using technology to communicate like no generation before them - mobile text messaging, IM, MySpace pages, video cell phones and online video games, etc.... Technology permeates their lives and their interests drive innovation in a significant way. At the same time, in addition to spending money on technology, teens are emerging as innovators in the industry. These young entrepreneurs are changing our world-using fresh tech-savvy ideas to create new businesses and garnering the attention of investors in the process. How are teens impacting the way technology is developed? How are these technologies scaling into businesses? And what about the teens themselves- are they creating companies? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed during this exceptional program. This program is an exceptional opportunity to learn first hand from the teens themselves how they are driving the tech industry and what new ideas they're working on to move the industry forward. Who Should Attend the Conference? Entrepreneurs, Business Strategists, Product Managers and others targeting the teen markets Investors Teens themselves of course! The Central Role of "Kids of All Ages" in the Design, Development & Growth of Interactive Computing and Digital Media For the past 40 years, kids (of all ages) have played an often unseen, but very critical role in the development of multiple generations of of interactive computing and related digital media technologies. While interactive education/learning and edutainment have been target applications for young people since the development of the first computer-assisted instruction (CAI) in the 1960's, this growing target consumer audience has often co-designed and driven the growth of major new computing paradigms and digital media -- from the first personal computer created at Xerox PARC to new programming languages (for the rest of us), animation, multiplayer games, virtual worlds and social networks. This talk will combine a number of personal stories and examples from the past four decades, but will connect this to current work I'm doing to help catalyze kids co-creating a Virtual Museum of the Future in Second Life, co-developing new applications for robotic pet dinosaurs (Pleo), and the creation of open source web-based collaboratories as dynamic community knowledge and learning gardens. The central theme will tie to the power of social learning in communities of practice, as well as re-thinking how the creativity and technology skills of today's digital natives can help shape and re-shape the future. Ted Kahn is the co-founder, President and CEO of DesignWorlds for Learning, Inc. and Chief Learning Officer/Learning & Careers Coach for DesignWorlds for College and Careers. Kahn is an award-winning developer of educational multimedia products, hypermedia computer-based training systems and user education strategies and support materials for new kinds of tools for lifelong learning and creativity. He has been actively involved in the creation, development and support of the field of interactive computing and digital media for learning for nearly 40 years. Starting with co-founding the Computer Education Project at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley in 1971, he did his PhD research with personal computer visionaries and pioneers, Alan Kay, Adele Goldberg and the Learning Research Group at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the mid-late 1970's. He was then founding Executive Director of the Atari Institute for Educational Action Research (Atari/Warner Communications), an executive with Picodyne Corporation and Manager of User Education at Digital F/X, Inc. (which pioneered desktop digital video editing and production systems on the Macintosh in 1989-1991). His more recent action and learning design research work was at the Institute for Research on Learning (IRL), and the Galef Institute. His work at DesignWorlds has focused on the design and development of online collaborative learning communities, web-based science museum and learning collaboratories, and most recently, helping guide and coach high school and college students to finding their passions, interests and optimal learning/early career paths through college to grad school and beyond. In 2003, he was named the first lifetime NMC Fellow of the New Media Consortium, its highest individual honor, for his lifetime of work in developing and using interactive digital technologies and media for learning, teaching, and creative expression. His wife, Frona, President of DesignWorlds for College, was one of the co-founders of The Learning Company in 1981, a company which helped launch the educational software industry for personal computers. Ted and Frona were both co-founding board members of the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose. Ted received his B.A. in computer science (with distinction), and his M.A and Ph.D. in psychology, all from the University of California, Berkeley. http://mediax.stanford.edu/spr08_seminar_series.html Peter Wallenberg Learning Theater - Bldg 160, Room 124 12 Mar 2008 at 6:31pm

Event by Forum One Networks. The Online Community Unconference is a gathering of online community practitioners - managers, developers, business people, tool providers, investors - to discuss experience and strategies in the development and growth of online communities. Those involved in online community development (and social software in general) share many common challenges: community management, tools, marketing, business models, legal issues. As we have found with our past events, the best source of information on all of these challenges is other knowledgeable practitioners. The Online Community Unconference is inspired by the emerging "open space" conference format. (For an excellent description, see this CNN Money article on last year's Unconferences.) An extensive Unconference FAQ has been posted here: http://www.forumonenetworks.com/unconferencefaq The Computer History Museum in Mountain View is a unique venue with plenty of parking and WiFi. Lunch and snacks will be provided, and the Museum exhibits will be open to the group during the breaks. Price: Early bird pricing of $145 is available until May 18th. After May 18th, the fee is $195. Space is limited. Fee is fully refundable prior to June 4, not refundable after (but admission is transferable). Rule, Britannia! Britannia rule the stars! Britain?s flag extends to Venus, Mercury and Mars! Don't miss PEERS' third venture in a Victorian Steampunk event: Space 1899 - a Victorian Ball in Space. Program your Babbage Analytical Engines, sail the luminiferous ether between the worlds to this Nineteenth Century science fiction ball, and keep Venus British! The year is an alternate 1899 in which, thanks to inventor Thomas Alva Edison, computer engineer Thomas Babbage, software developer Ada, Countess of Lovelace, visionary scientists Herbert George Wells and Jules Verne, and many other distinguished men and women of science and engineering, the Victorians have air and space travel, high technology, computers (difference engines), efficient software (the versatile and elegant ADA), and even email ("electric messaging"). The Great Game has extended to Outer Space with Great Britain, Germany, Russia and those intrepid Americans rushing to colonize every planet in sight. Welcome to Space 1899. This is the milieu of our ball. Join His Excellency, the Governor of Her Majesty?s Crown Colony of Venus, for a formal ball to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of British rule on the planet. Diplomats, explorers, scientists and artists from Earth and from around the galaxy are cordially invited to attend. Bangers & Mash , that most British of American dance bands, plays the greatest dance hits of the 1890?s and early 1900's for an evening of vintage ballroom dancing. Dance beautiful waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, schottisches, reels, The Lancers, and some of those dashing new American dances (the Ragtime Two-Step, the One-Step, and the so-called Argentine Tango). All "new" dances and pattern dances will be (briefly) taught or called, partners are not required (Your hosts will be happy to introduce you newcomers to partners). For those of you wishing to brush up on the latest dances, there will also be a pre-ball dance class at 7:00 pm. Suggested costume is late Victorian or Edwardian evening dress, dress uniform (the year is 1899 but this IS an alternate universe so you can use your imagination), "Venusian" evening dress or science fiction/fantasy costume appropriate to the balls theme. As usual, however, costumes are admired, not required. There will be a no-host (cash) bar and a special performance by the celebrated and daring Cirque de Venus. 26 Feb 2008 at 2:26pm

In a unique multi-media staging of two 20th century masterpieces, we meld music and art to probe the secrets of the inner mind of a legendary villain (Bluebeard) and the magical inner world of a child's capricious mind. Both of these operas are famous for their exquisite beauty of orchestration and depth of imagination. The orchestra will be on the stage for this production. The soloists will be closer to the audience and visually meld with the imaginative projections. Naomie Kremer , the internationally exhibited painter and computer artist, will animate Bluebeard's Castle , and Ariel will create the images which illuminate Ravel's L'enfant et les Sortilèges . We are Northern State. Our third album, ?Can I Keep This Pen?? which features production by Adrock of the Beastie Boys and Chuck Brody of S~~take Monkey, is currently out on Mike Patton?s label, Ipecac Recordings. 2007 was a pretty awesome year for us ?we toured throughout the U.S. and Canada with our friends Tegan and Sara and will be heading to Europe with them in Feb. 2008. Two songs from ?Can I Keep This Pen?? were featured on Grey?s Anatomy and a third was featured on the FX series Damages. JD from Le Tigre did a hot remix of our single ?Better Already? and we released it on vinyl. We also contributed our take on Radiohead?s ?No Surprises? to Stereogum?s 10th anniversary tribute to OK Computer. Northern State is Spero, Hesta Prynn, and Sprout. We grew up together in deep suburban Long Island and we?ve been friends forever. We have now been a band for seven years. ?Can I Keep This Pen?? is our third proper album, following ?All City? (Columbia Records, 2004), ?Dying in Stereo? (Northern State Records/Startime/Wichita UK, 2003), and our 2002 independent EP ?Hip Hop You Haven?t Heard?, which was supposed to be our demo. We got our start playing gigs all over NYC, and we have had the good fortune of sharing the stage in the US and Europe with the Roots, Le Tigre, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, The Gossip, Gym Class Heroes, Tegan and Sara, and Cake. After ?All City? was released, we became increasingly frustrated with the Columbia/SONY machine and left the label. Finally free, we teamed up with Chuck Brody (Wu-Tang Clan, Yoko Ono) and Adrock and independently recorded ?Can I Keep This Pen??, with the help of a few friends like Kaki King and Murray Hill. This album pushes the limits more than anything we?ve recorded before in terms of what a hip hop song might sound like, what a rock song might sound like, and what Northern State might sound like We are thrilled to be part of the Ipecac family. ?Can I Keep This Pen?? is distributed internationally through Fontana and Southern in Europe and by Entak in Japan. 26 Apr 2008 at 6:26am

25 Apr 2008 at 3:56pm
